Hori has been living in New York for almost two decades and sees himself very much as an American painter, but one with strong ties to his heritage. “I still feel that when someone looks at my work, they can tell it is Japanese. I bring my native country’s strong calligraphic tradition into my works. The shapes and separations of space that I create on the canvas are firmly rooted in an inspiration from this tradition”.
